Untamed…
Untamed
by Glennon Doyle
Untamed-wow I don’t entirely know where to start, and writing this is actually quite a challenge as I fear I could never do this book justice. I truly believe that Glennon Doyle had to have been channeling some massive divine guidance in writing this masterpiece. I cried, I felt alive, I felt pain. But more than any of those, I felt a deep rumbling in my spirit; a knowing that my life was about to change forever. That everything I had been feeling, was for something. And that I was not alone.
Untamed is raw, beautiful, earth shattering and painfully relatable. Glennon speaks (in beautiful imagery I might add) on the experience of moving from following societies expectations and doing the “right thing” all the time, to evolving into the most ecstatic, true, uncaged versions of ourselves.
And I mean, isn’t that the kind of life you’d want to live??
I started The Wild Women’s Collective well before having read Untamed, and reading this book I could not help but cry in joy, saying to myself “THIS, this is what I have known to be true in my core!!! THIS is what I have known to be part of my life’s work here on earth, to empower women to step out of society’s cage, and into their wild!” This book feels like it was written as the manifesto for WWC! And if you’re friends with me, I’ve probably given you a copy at one point or another because EVERYONE needs this truth in their life! Thank you Glennon Doyle, for speaking the truth that so many desperately needed to hear.
The book begins with a family trip to the zoo. Glennon and her daughter are watching this attraction, the “cheetah run.” Glennon, her daughter and a crowd of strangers watch this wild, fierce and majestic animal…. chase a stuffed pink rabbit tied to the back of a jeep down a clearly outlined path. This gains applaud from the crowd and a steak thrown at the cheetah as a reward. As everyone else cheers, it all hits Glennon; what could be possible if only this cheetah could remember her wild, for one moment. How many of US have been living this life as caged animals, following a path carved out for us, living for moments of praise and acknowledgment that we have “done a good job” and are doing what is expected of us. Wild animals, keeping our heads down at that sensation within that screams “this can’t be it.” Any feelings or ideas we have that stray from that belief, get us labeled as crazy or ungrateful, so we continue. But as Glennon so beautifully depicts in this book - that is the furthest thing from the truth…
“You are not crazy, you are a god damn cheetah.”
Through this book, Glennon shares her story of finally embracing the life that has been awaiting her in an unfiltered and full of magic tone. From unexpected love, setting boundaries with family members, co parenting, God vs religion, doing what others perceive as crazy to follow your own truth and saying yes when you want to say yes, and no when you want to say no….this is truly a life changing book for any woman, at any age.
This book will inspire you to begin the unlearning of everything you have been programed to believe, and to start letting your intuition and desires guide you instead. One of the stand out lessons that resonated with me from this book, (damn, there are so many) and that I deeply practice and nurture in all of the women inside of The Wild Women’s Collective, is that sometimes we have to quit being “good,” so that we can actually be free. Abandon society’s expectations of you, and stop abandoning yourself.
“I will not stay, not ever again, in a room or conversation or relationship or institution that requires me to abandon myself. When my body tells me the truth, I’ll believe it. I trust myself now, so I will no longer suffer voluntarily or silently or for long.” - Glennon Doyle
